Rhyme Asylum State Of Lunacy LP

If you don’t know Rhyme Asylum, the first thing you need to do before you stick State of Lunacy on is to forget all your preconceptions of the conventional UK hip hop you have probably heard recently.
State of Lunacy is the first album from the London collective and attempts to redress the balance with a raw, aggressive and arrogant sneer that is all too lacking in British hip hop these days.
Right from the start Possessed, Skirmish, Plasma and Psiklone deliver a feast of dark lyrical imagery over with the unassuming yet orchestral laced tracks from beatsmith Leatherface.
Those of you familiar with the Jump Off rap battles will undoubtedly already know of Possessed, who reached the final of the World Rap Championships back in 2006 with partner Reain, who makes an appearance on the tracks Straight Jacket Parts 1 and 2. Possessed shows he clearly hasn’t lost his touch, serving up killer verses with ease throughout the album.
Personal favourites of mine include Attitude Problem featuring Copywrite and Iller Instinct, but to be honest, there isn’t a bad track on it.

Cynics may point to a lack of variety, that’s not what this album is really about. Although I admit to being an advocate of rhyming skill and perhaps a bit biased as a result, the sheer talent on offer makes you just have to sit up and take notice. The group has since reduced in size with only Possessed, Psiklone and Skirmish remaining, but nonetheless, the future holds big things for Rhyme Asylum.
