Heritage Orchestra ft. DJ Yoda G. Prokofiev Concerto For Turntables & Orchestra LP
The result of a collaboration between pianist and independent producer Will Dutta (Chimera Productions), Gabriel Prokofiev (better known as Lady Sov's producer Medasyn), DJ Yoda and Heritage Orchestra.
The score aimed to explore most of the different techniques available from the turntable as a solo ‘instrument’, with each movement focusing on certain DJ skills. In the fourth movement the turntable is used as melody instrument, using the pitch control and 33 / 45 rpm button to create a 6-note scale, and sampling a flute note from the Orchestra which results in a sound reminiscent of a theremin. All the sounds on DJ Yoda’s vinyl are samples taken from the orchestra.
I know less than zero about classical music but the result is to my ears a missed opportunity and a half realised idea on this release – only 5 of the 21 tracks are original compositions with the remaining 16 being remixes of the original 5. The original 5 movements are all short in length too. There are some beats here which rappers can use and some of the remixes are to my ears better than the originals, which bearing in mind the scope of the original project is a little disappointing.
