 South Coast The Movie

Directed by Will Jewell (and funded in part by the Arts Council) , this is a look at the hip hop scene in London by the Sea (aka 'Brighton', East Sussex.) It is in many ways a general film about hip hop rather than just about hip hop in Brighton . You do get a sense of what is unique as well as appealing about this seaside scene and scenery but you do not get a sense that there is something particularly unique about Brighton hip hop artistry - the 'leftfield' of the Brighton scene is not covered.

The film features the likes of Buzz, Beardyman, Dr Syntax, Koaste, Stig of The Dump, Deliverance, Norman Cook, JFB, Evil Ed, 184, Blackgrass etc. There’s great breaking action from Battlejam featuring JP, The Floor Crusaders and Dancing Bears amongst others. There is some indication of the size of the B-town graf community (there is now even a book on Brighton graf!) with the likes of Aroe, Rarekind Fam, Odisy, Req1, Taco etc featured but here the art takes second place to the talking headz. There is generally a nice balance of the old and new faces here to give a good sense of the history.

Some interesting topics were touched on like hip hop during the 'rave era' and some salient points were not explored at all, like the fact that many of the artists featured are not native to Brighton and some of whom originally established themselves as artists elsewhere. A major omission was failing to look at the abstracted hip hop of the 'big beat' genre of music which arguably has some of it's roots in Brighton.
