Le Donk And Scor-Zay-Zee (Warp Films)

Dir. Shane Meadows. UK. 2009. 71 mins

An entertaining UK rap mocumentary starring Paddy Considine and arguably one of the greatest ever UK rappers, namely Scor-zay-zee (Dean Palinczuk), formerly of the group Out Da Ville. It blurs Scorz's real life (drug induced psychosis, conversion to Islam) with the improvised storyline, in which the Donk (Considine's character) a rocking roadie / manager is prominent: the camera follows Considine as the 'star' of the piece. Scorz plays his role straight and shows himself to be a competent actor alongside the larger-than-life Considine. The plot focuses on the Donk trying to get Scorz a support slot at an Arctic Monkeys gig...

The soundtrack is mainly acoustic singer-songwriter stuff (which seems incongrous here), and why Scorz's music does not take centre stage in the soundtrack is baffling. It could be argued that the film in a small way echoes the mentorship that Trevor Rose, Nick Stez and others of the Community Recording Studio based in St. Ann's, Nottingham have provided many young people. Another story for Meadows to tell!

All credit to all involved in this project which should help introduce a criminally underexposed artist to audiences worldwide.

My advice is wait till it appears on Film 4...

Le Donk & Scor-Zay-Zee is out now at the cinema and released on DVD on the 26th October
