Baseheadz Baseheadz! EP
Instrumental hiphop is always a bit of a touchy subject and gets treated with the big bargepole, mainly because trip-hop evolved from its roots. This self titled 4 track EP from Baseheadz is rhymless throughout, which is no bad thing providing the beats serve up enough variety and soul to carry the tunes. The first offering ‘Firewire’ couldn’t hit the proverbial barn door in terms of variety or soul, which had me fearing this would be yet another dull instrumental wash-out.
The EP picks up considerably for tracks 2 and 3. ‘Baseheadz!’ & ‘The Scratch Mechanic’ both allow you to get totally immersed into the music, switching up just enough to keep them fresh sounding. These tracks really do stand strong as pieces of music, which wouldn’t be out of place in any collection. Unfortunately, the final track ‘Stay’ reverts back to being flat and passionless, which leaves a sour taste in the mouth as the EP ends. A true mixed bag, this EP frustratingly sways from epic to arse and back again. It frankly would have been better served up as a 12” with all the unnecessary fat trimmed off.
