Daedelus Denies the Day's Demise LP

This new album from American producer Daedelus is touted as the electronic, or techno, answer to his first outing, ‘Exquisite Corpse’, focusing on the live elements of his work rather than his sampling abilities. Well his live show left me cold last year, and so has this album. In trying to showcase a multitude of styles and elements, all soaked in electronica, Daedelus ends up noodling, mucking everything up and not really managing to hit the spot. Brief moments of clarity and head-nod drown in a sea of confusion, clashing beats and melodies. A bit like an exercise in style gone wrong, trying to show too much and ending up not showing anything at all – from latin rhythms to hip hop breaks via techno, thumping beats. It’s a shame though because there really could have been some great moments if those had been focused on more than just brushed over and assimilated into what I guess the artist sees as some clever collage of styles. Unless you like your music to be really out there and ‘different for different’s sake’ I’d steer as far off this offering as possible.
