Rack-Lo Rack Lauren
LP
This member of the Lo-Life is not as well known as his counterpart Thirstin Howl IIIrd. After an album out already, that got a mixed bag of reviews that I’ve read, its his time to really prove what he’s made of. One of the reviews I read said that Rack-Lo was an emcee who had potential but hadn’t yet shown it yet. Well this is his second album, its 2001 and things have changed. If you look at this release its quite possible your first impression will be ‘Thugged Out’ but after further listens I feel its more than that. Sure you’ve got your Ralph Lauren quotes, and how Lo-Lifes used to steal loads of shit, but it does go beyond that. The album doesn’t deal with much in terms of change the world with what’s in your lyrics, but they work well and give enjoyment to the listener. Tracks like ‘Richman/Poorman’ show Rack-Lo’s lyrics, able to keep a rhyme together when he’s flipping between the persona of a rich man and a poor man. ‘I’m rich , I’m poor, I live legal, I break the law’ is the hook which is a great break down of the idea behind the track, really love this one. Other great tracks are ‘Hustlah’ ‘Ralphies Kidzz’ and ‘Merk’. All the lyrics on which are like I said not change the world type, and not ‘conscious’ (Fuck I hate that word in terms of hiphop), but he manages to keep the tracks interesting and if his lyrics let him down he makes up for it in his flow. The production to me seems like its there mainly just to support his lyrics, and it works in its own right, nothing ground breaking but it keeps the tracks together. It sounds fairly low budget, yet well filtered and polished if that makes sense. Over all I’m liking this project a lot, its not going to change the face of hiphop in the sense of being ground breaking, but it keeps me listening through almost all tracks. Rack-Lo is a very well rounded MC and i would like to hear more of him in the future. Infact theres not much about this album i would change, it works within what the artist has set out to do. I’m willing to put my head in the block on this release, as I can’t be sure if everyone will be digging it, but this is my review and my opinion, so with that in mind I’d say check it out.
