Kid Koala Your Mum's Favourite DJ LP
The only marsupial to have successfully survived in the cold wastelands of Canada, Kid Koala returns with a 3rd solo album, three years after his last offering. In that time the Koala has shown that he is indeed a man of many talents - an illustrator, graphic artist, film maker, puppet master and an accomplished musician with the works to prove it.
He’s also one of the few ‘turntablists’ who has always placed more emphasis on composition and story telling than on technicality and speed - showing that this marsupial is an artist more than a scratch nerd. The tools and techniques are used to further the music rather than to showcase skills.
The new album takes the same format as his legendary ‘Scratchcratchratchatch’ mixtape, which got him signed to Ninja Tune in the first place, with 2 sides clocking in at just over 30 minutes. Keeping it short but sweet he wades through a pile of samples, styles and rhythms in the process referencing his previous work and hinting at the projects to come (including a puppet show and his new band). Sounds crazy but it works – as the Koala cuts and pastes, composes and scratches you find yourself drawn in further every time you listen to it.
I was hoping for something closer to a proper ‘album’ of sorts, like his last offering, yet the more you listen to this the more you realise the intricacy of the work and the wealth hidden inside. This is definitely more mixtape than album, and it shows that Kid Koala still has what it takes to do what no one else will today. And for that we’re thankful.
