Kidz In The Hall School Was my Hustle LP

Having brought us some quality hip hop since its formation, Rawkus attempt to revive the trend with Kidz In The Hall. The producer/MC partnership is one that has faded since the days of Run DMC and Gangstarr but that’s exactly the sort of vibe beat-maker Double-0 and MC Naledge are trying to bring, as their debut album attempts to bring a different message to what we are usually used to from modern day hip hop.

Meeting at the University of Pennsylvania, their background is also one not typical for many hip hop artists, and this is something they seem to take pride in as they tell listeners that while street talk is real, it’s not necessarily the life you have to follow. This is not to say, that the whole album is concerned with raps about social consciousness, shown with tunes like the straight-up funk of Cruise Control, reminiscent of something you might have heard in the early 90’s.

The old school feel is balanced out by the modern day influences and heavy use of sampling. Although this type of production is beginning to fall out of favour with many hip hop fans, Kidz In The Hall still manage to create some absorbing tunes, especially with stand out tracks Till The Wheelz Fall Off, and Don’t Stop, which uses the same sample as Just Blaze used for Jay Z’s Show Me What You Got.

The album isn’t necessarily ground-breaking but what makes it so refreshing is that they have simply concentrated on striving to make well-produced piece of work that depicts experiences anyone can relate to and show the start of a promising partnership.
