Brother El Through The Cracks Of The Concrete LP

Chicago emcee Brother El came out of nowhere for me, I’ve never heard of this man ever before. But Chicago is fairly well known for good hiphop, like All Natural, it also appears to be an experimental scene. Well this release does fit into the trend, but when I say its experimental, I don’t mean its wank but I don’t want to diss it so I’ll call it ‘experimental’. Some of the tracks such as ‘Pay Close Attention’ and ‘Broken Dreams’ have really interesting rhyme patterns, with beats that are off time. ‘I just Wanna Hold Your Hand’ is some more classical feeling stuff, but still El gives it his own unique touch and can tell a story like your mum before bed time. ‘State Street Rush’ has a very ‘Dem Phonies’ mad beat to it, with no rapping this is one of the weaker tracks as it doesn’t really give the listener much. Best track ‘It’s Amazing’ for me is just that, clever aromatic beats with intelligent tales of the street (no not thug stories!).

This album would be worth an inspection, but don’t expect that many full tracks, only about 8. The main point the album falls down is not fitting a theme. ‘Fade It’ seems to stand out like a sore thumb, as it doesn’t fit nicely into the LP’s aim. But who am I to say what the artist set out to achieve, but he has achieved an LP that is going to appeal, as when its good (most of it) it can’t be faulted, but its weak spots mean its not a classic by any means.
