Cadence Weapon In Search Of The Youth Crew 7"
In ‘In Search of the Youth Crew’ Cadence Weapon gives a seminar in how to make a great, contemporary rap record. After an interesting, yet inconsistent debut LP Cadence pulls no punches in this first single from his follow up album, ‘After Dinner Babies’, due out this autumn.
Current trends have seen many a mainstream rap and r&b producer trading in on saccharine European dance music while Cadence returns to something less obvious – the late 80s’, early 90s’ San Francisco acid house sound - while still sounding as modern and relevant as anything out there. He also exhibits a commanding vocal presence, drawing on disparate subject matter; cocaine addled hairdressers, Sylar (the villainous anti-hero from ‘Heroes’, if you don’t know, get to know) and both the tribal and territorial nature of youth. Dr Syntax made a similarly themed song last year, but not nearly as good.
Could Cadence Weapon be the Anglo-American (Canadian, but y’know..) rap act to save us from the current malaise of milky tea indie bands? Who knows, but I am certainly looking forward to hearing him try.
