This LP is made up of the three previous Atmosphere EP’s that to my knowledge only one had a CD release. So this is your only chance to get either the whole lot in one go, or to get them on a CD. Frankly I’d recommend getting this unless you have at least two of the EP’s on vinyl, as your not going to get a more complete catalogue of their work until they release a ‘proper’ LP. To split this album up, you’ve got Slug who is an incredible emcee who manages to engage the listener with his thoughts. This is best demonstrated on tracks such as ‘Don’t Ever Fucking Question That’, ‘If I Was Santa Claus’ and ‘The Women With The Tattooed Hands’. In fact the only track that I don’t find Slug a great emcee on is ‘Free Or Dead’ as I just find the subject matter somewhat boring. But apart from that Slug maintains a hugely high standard. The production is not the best your going to ever hear, and I feel Slug would shine on better beats such as on ‘Uncle Sam’ on All Naturals ‘Second Nature’. The fact is that the beats are only really great on ‘The Women With The Tattooed Hands’ and ‘Mama Had A Baby And His Head Popped Off’. The rest of the tracks are very simple beats with very little innovation or emotion arousing. Ant, Jel and Moodswing have all had an attempt at making good beats on this LP but there not quite there, just getting to slightly above average. Luckily though, I feel Slug manages to make the listener want to carry on listening. As much as I feel the production should have been better, I can’t take it away from Atmosphere that they have managed to create a very interesting and unique album. If only for Slug’s rhyming I should get his, and just admire this mans strange yet brilliant flow. © ukhh.com 1999 - 2001 |
