 Vikter Duplaix DJ Kicks (mixtape)

Vikter Duplaix has put together a nice addition to K7's DJ Kicks series. The DJ Kicks series takes tailor-made sets from visionary DJs and producers n' attempts to make up genre-hopping medleys of sounds, styles and artists - other featured DJ's have included Nightmares on Wax, Stereo MC's, Rockers Hi-Fi, etc. This mix hasnt diverted from the stated template - diversely waving slowly and sublimely through intelligent dnb, soulful rnb and chilled hiphop - all with the minimum of fuss and hardly a hair out of place. This is smooth-ness with a hyphen. Its a bit of a shame for me then that I'm not really into the music I just mentioned! Still lets give the DJ his dues - this mix does flow. Its nothing if not a very slick mesh of smooth house rhythms in a pure blend.

Each track is sequenced into the next via an electronic voice - similar to your host on a hiphop tape - except all wired out. Dunno its a bit like having Stephen Hawking on the mix n' blend at times. But without the quantum science to keep things interesting. As I mentioned the musical choice isnt really for me - being mainly filled with housey rythms coupled with silky RnB. Suprisingly, however I found it was sufficiently diverse to keep me from turning off (only just at times though!). Its a bit up its own arse at times n' I dont really like mixes which seem to slick to be true - a bit more grime in between the brakes would've helped it slide down the palate. I really enjoyed the later stages of the mix. This brought the main highlights which include: Ashley Beedles remix of Shawn Lee's 'Happiness' which is percussively ace, Taurus's 'Together' which oozes summery vibes, De La's 'Copa (Cabanga)', Bahamadia's 'Philidelphia' and Erykah Badu's 'Bag Lady'. Most of these highlights crop up during the latter 'wind down' stages of the set - a bit late for me.

The aim of a good mix is take the listener on a journey n' drag the ear into places it wouldnt normally go and in that sense it brought some real relaxation and forced deep vocal house down my gullet. The mix had sufficient diversity to get multiple listens although some tracks are really repetitive. I cant seeing this getting heavy rotation on my stereo because the main body of the mix isnt broadside enough - the good moments are too sparsely seperated for my bigot ears. Someone needed to rough up the hair of the DJ during this mix and tell him to stop taking itself so seriously. Its bad for your health.
