 Various Game Over LP

With compilations coming out with much more regularity these days, there is always the problem that you might have to part with your hard earned Queens Heads for a couple of blinding tracks on an compilation filled with crap filler material. Thankfully, this compilation doesn't fall into that category. The Game Over compilation features tracks 'from and inspired by video games' as the marketing blurb says. Some samples are more obvious than others, but a couple will have you banging your head against against the wall trying to think where they came from.

The album quite nicely pairs off better known artists such as Cocoa Brovaz, Eminem, and Masta Ace, with lesser known emcees signed to the label, but the good news is that at no point are any artists outshined on the tracks by their more recognised peers. Production on this album is mostly top notch, and the samples are incorporated well. To give you an example of the kind of tracks on the album 'Hellbound', featuring Masta Ace, Eminem, and J-Black, flips a Soul Calibur sample to great effect, 'Punch Out', with the Cocoa Brovaz, Xun Tsu, and Most Talented uses the old school Punch Out music for it's beat, and 'Petrified' featuring Dhark Citi, has a killer loop, that I can't quite put my finger on... (insert sound of head colliding with wall)

Elsewhere, theres an interesting bounce track, with Masta Ace spitting rapid fire delivery over The Simpsons theme music, however to 'keep it real', they used the computer game music version of the beat rather than the TV version, and for you hip hop collector fiends (like me) there's both versions of the now famous 'Super Brooklyn' by the Cocoa Brovaz, the version from the Duckdown website featuring Mr Cheeks, and the 12" version featuring just Tek and Steele.

Add to that skits that are actually humourous, and way to many dope tracks to mention in this review, and you've got a compilation well worth the money.
