Doc Brown Out There / Sometimes 12"

The first track on this double a-side 12" has Doc Brown collaborating with DupaStyle's YunGun across a Harry Love beat - the subject of 'Out There' is straight party n' tales of goodtimes. The two MC's bounce smoothly off each other n' flip tales of gettin ready to roll out for a night on the town - both Yungun and Doc Brown have funny lyrics and more importantly the clear diction to put them across with both presence and flair. This is a wicked little track - nothing to taxing n' it aint gonna stress your cerebelum into a wobbly stressed jelly. The Harry Love beat just slinks about subtlety switching up n' flexing a casual guitar riff - the beat blends up into the mc's and just eases everything into place. A nice over easy pre-session type of joint.

The second a-side 'Sometimes' is a lot tighter with Doc Brown handlng his own ish with solo rapping vocals - these work alongside a sweet little female vocalist Mandisa who douses the chorus with some sunshine singing. The beat is pretty bare with simple bassline n' a sharp snare - the beat doesnt have a lot of layering which slightly strips it of soul and atmosphere. This track could work well but I felt the beat became monotonous and left too much responsibility on the vocalists to lift the vibe - it works to a certain extent but after multiple listens it feels quite limp. This is the sorta track that can benefit from those deep organic type of breaks - that said Doc Brown handles his business and shows the consistency which allows him to easily hold down a solo slab of wax without too many guest appearances.

Overall - this is another tidy 12" from Janomi - Doc Brown shows his skills on the mic and from the two tracks 'Out There' was my definite favourite.
