Out da Ville Life
12"
Out da Ville have begun their assault on UK hiphop and they're not letting off until people sit up and recognise the talent they have. This EP shows again the quality. Those of you who still think of dodgy yank accents when you think of this crew have got alot of catching up to do. This is a mature and still maturing group of British MCs, DJs and producers (DJ Fever impressing alongside Nick Stez and Big Trev), this EP reflecting their maturity with intelligent lyrics and on point production. The title track showcases Tempa, "Out da Ville's first lady of rap" and I'd go as far as to say the UK's too on present form. The beats are mellow and almost what you'd expect to find Funky DL rhyming over. Tempa shows us that she's not all about attitude and aggression on the mic - there's a reflective and deeper side to her too. Track 2 is a posse cut 'Reality'. It has more of the boom-bap feel to it, with it's nice horn samples, wicked bongo-led percussion and tasty bass too. All the MCs come proper (Scor-zat-zee, Tempa; Lee Ramsay, C-Mone and Karizma), and there's some rather nice scratching dropped in here and there too. Side B belongs to Lee Ramsay with his track 'Why is it?'. Just listen to the lyrics if you're still looking for proof that he's worth taking notice of. The beats play their part too, creating quite a tense backdrop to Ramsey's words on the situation of black people in the UK making this a great track although I think he could have done more with the refrain, varying it from verse to verse maybe but still keeping the 'Why is it?' vocals throughout. An excellent EP then, and with instrumentals of 'Why is it?' and 'Reality' plus it's accapella, it's pretty good value for money too.
