DJ Format We Know Something You Don’t Know 12"
This is the first single to be taken off the well received ‘Music For A Mature Bboy’ LP which recently dropped. ‘We know Something You Don’t Know’ features Chali 2na and Akil for a real Jurassic 5’esc type jam. An incredibly phat break is used to live up to the bboy claim, this gives the whole track a real club vibe. The nice piano loop is added to try a spice things up a bit, but I feel it may be slightly under-used. The track starts to feel slightly stale by the end, even with the two emcees bouncing off each other well.
On the b-side is ‘Here Comes The Fuzz’ with yet another large break being used as a backdrop for some organ action. The Fuzz bass which plays a large part in this track is played by The Indian Ropeman who dropped an LP on Fatboy Slims label. Purely instrumental, so may not be to all you hardcore rap fans tastes.
The highlight for me comes with ‘As The Drum Pounds’ featuring Abdominal. This track is heavy as fuck, with surprise surprise…no not Cila… another break being used. Wicked cutting in this track adds to its appeal, but it’s Abdominal who steals the show with his comedy British stereotype rap, quality stuff.
This twelve certainly has kept its roots firmly in hiphop stable, so don’t expect any real surprises with it. If you like your breaks and some less serious rhymes, this will be right up your alley.
