DJ Mentat ft. Skinnyman When I Give My Heart To You 12"
OK, not exactly too sure who this DJ Mentat is, but after Skinnys LP I couldn’t really overlook this when I saw it in the record shop. I know Mentat was also responsible for the ‘Rugged Wid It’ tune doing the rounds with Roots Manuva & Seanie T if that helps ring any bells.
Anyway, the guy cooks up the nicest twelve I’ve heard in 2005. OK, only a few weeks in, true… but if this is setting the tone for this year I’ll be a happy man indeed! A high pitched vocal sample always works a treat and this is no exception! A head nodding break beat with a few light strings is enough to carry your full attention for the track. Butter! Skinnyman drops some lines about how he’s given his heart to hiphop. OK, nothing groundbreaking about that, but Skinny always manages to sound sincere in his rhymes. A tasty little remix of the track is given by DJ Destruction on the flip, which gives that extra value for money because the beat gives the lyrics a totally different feel than the previous.
Can’t really see to many people turning their noses up at this release, an essential purchase for almost everyone!
