 Rup King Cnut/Angels & Devils 12"

Another big impact from Brighton on the UK scene. Rup breaks into the fore with the debut 12” release from Hear Today Recordings.

Rup’s first 12” release is as good as any debut offering you are likely to have heard this year, and this 3-track effort will arrive just in time for Christmas. King Cnut is a real head nodder, laced with plenty of horns, and a full repertoire of one-liners. The Evil sun produced track is quite sedately paced, but this tempo doesn’t really detract from the overall feel, which also benefits from DJ Manipulates cutting.

Angels & Devils is blessed with a real classical vibe. The sample used by Steve Clear on production is properly haunting, and is well coupled with some nice classical strings. Rup produces some inspired lyrics that fit in with the feel, and flow of the production, a real tune where you don’t know which came first; beats or lyrics. The lyrics are deep to a point, but not overly depressing and melancholy.

Brace Yourself is my favourite though, a nice funk led punch-line track, an instant hook. Dirty funk guitar riff, and a double-time break give this the structure, which is combined with piano chords, and the razor-like one-liners from Rup. Definitely one for my sack this Christmas.
