 First Rate Barfight 12"

Former Scratch Pervert First Rate is finally stepping up to the album arena this year with his ‘Walky Talkyz’ LP, the first single of which is ‘Barfight’. Now even if you’re not a scratch nerd, First Rate should be a name that rings bells, having worked with the likes of Morcheeba, US3, Massive Attack and Vadim in recent years. This first single is a nice little offering with Skinny on one side and US live outfit the Procussions on the flip. ‘Barfight’ rolls along nicely on a jazzy little piano riff while Skinny goes about doing what he does best (which depending on where you stand is talk shit or rhyme hard) and fits over the simple yet head nodding track very nicely indeed. Flip over for ‘Freedom’, featuring The Procussions, a more upbeat, jazzy offering reminiscent of A Tribe Called Quest. Alternating between the Procussions vocals and First Rate’s scratches this is a solid track and an altogether solid single, boding well for the forthcoming LP.
