Jack Flash Living Legend 12"
Warming us up for his forthcoming album “Union Jack”, Jack Flash kicks off this EP with the energetic track “Living Legend”. A cleverly cut up chorus introduces the song, then Flash sets about letting the world know what he’s about. Definitely suitable for the dancefloor, and by far the best track on this 12”
“4 Tha Headz” has an interesting swirling string sample over a stuttering beat, but the vocals and instrumental seem disconnected somehow, like it hasn’t been mastered properly. On the flip, “Warning” goes back to the horn stabs (vaguely ska/reggae-ish sounding) and is probably the 2nd best track here, a very solid tune with some quality rhymes. The last song is “My Way”, a more soulful cut, featuring the vocals of Tha-Bo, providing a nice counter-point to Jack Flash’s abrasive style.
All in all, this is a very good debut. The title track is the stand-out, but there’s also 3 other good songs here in various different ways. Just a shame “4 Tha Headz” doesn’t sound quite right.
8/10

Northern hip hop has a new star, some real quality on this EP
