 Black and Bronze 1-9-7-4 12"

This has been doing the rounds in my tape deck since late December but because I enjoy listening to it so much it never once occurred to me to review it for the site. The instrumental is so soulful that it is reminiscent of Pete Rock’s work. The sampled vocals glide over the loop beautifully but it is when the violins come in that I become truly enticed and can not help but try to sing along to the high pitched notes of the sampled soul diva. The MC’s voice and lyrical concepts compliment the track perfectly. His delving into past memories and reasons why he loves hip-hop blends perfectly into the classic soul sound that is captured. Quoting the MC will do him no justice what so ever but just might allow you to comprehend what I am writing:

Well if it started in my Dad’s, drumming in the basement.
On Friday, eating fried dumpling sit and watch him in amazement.
Familiar with that rhymatic pattern he laid out.
And now my thoughts are logically drawn to systematically spray out.
I mean, to me it is more than glocks and rocks.
More than stocks, and how many chickens you snatched from the flock.

My only criticism is that the MC sounds slightly American, but that is due to his flow more than an accent.
