The fifth single off 'The Unknown' and it's a re-release for the first one - Ya Don't See The Signs. A lot of comment has been made of the Feeder remix of this track (which I've not heard) but for some reason all you get on the vinyl release is the original + instrumental (that'll be three copies of the same track and instrumental I've got on three different releases then) and the Phi-Life Cypher mix....why the record bods couldn't put the other remix on full-release wax is a mystery...so you gotta understand you're paying four quid for a track virtually everyone will own already and a single new mix with instrumental...the remix seems to be more softly pressed than the original and it's at 45 whilst the other side is 33......but, anyway, that's the gripes over with cos the remix features Phi-life Cypher and it rocks! It goes like this: Blade starts with the usual first verse but re-recorded over a totally different Nappa beat...the chorus comes in with Phi-Life and then it's into their verses....starting typically - 'will phi-life be rated as the greatest rap groups - I doubt it' but then immediately showing their lyrical quality - ...and those just might be some of the weakest lyrics on this track! We know Phi-Life have got quality and they've shown it on this track, whether it can help to take them into Mark B and Blade territory remains to be seen, but respect to Mark & Blade for trying to take other acts with them on their ride, unfortunately it's the Feeder remix thats getting the airplay and i'm not sure which version is being done for Top Of The Pops but we've got to try and get the originals and things like this quality remix onto playlists rather than some rock/rap crossover potential if this scene's going to go in the right direction. As Gunshot said in '91 when Blade was selling his 12s on the streets of London and four years before Mark released his Jazz Fudge debut - 'No Sell Out'! It should be about time that Mark and Blade get signed up for a new album together and get preparing some new material as it's all sounding over familiar now, 'The Unknown' is getting a re-release on CD next week with some extra tracks so it'll be interesting to see if any of those are brand new or just rehashed versions of ex B-sides.... Anyway, this is meant to be a review. Buy this 12" cos the remix is very nice indeed and getting this tracks into the charts is surely only going to be good for the scene as a whole? Of course that means you'll have to buy it from Virgin or HMV or somewhere which is a different discussion altogether!
