 Jehst The Trilogy Remix 12"

This is another limited edition promo - Lowlife seems to be trying to corner this section of the market here in the UK. How many does this make in the last year? For me - this is maybe the weakest of the bunch. Its got nothing to do with the quality - I just feel its not fully a remix aka a reworking which brings a different vibe in relation to the original. Well - after examining over 100 remix's in the recent production competition I suppose its a proper touchy subject for me (having taken me to the edge of breakdown).

For this version of The Trilogy the beat remains identical - its a big lumbering heavy beat - which uses proper stodgey bass pulses which hit the aggressive sweetspot deep in your gut. First up on vocal duty is Taskforce's Chester P - who rides the beat well with some high quality verbals - packed with well structured mid and end line rhymes and plenty of lip curling moments as you get the punch three lines after the event. Next up steps Kyza - seemingly taking over the role of Richochet from the original - the track takes a subject switch with the verbals comin with more rudebwoy attitude. Its a good verse but I didnt feel the style truly matched the first and third spits on this track. Last up Jehst comes to finish up proceedings - the stage is set and disappointly he steps with just an OK verse. It's definitely NOT low quality - far from it - of course he spits with immense presence but it seems plainly OK when compared to the absolute masterpiece layed down on the original ("putting LSD in your salt-shaker / And if it’s in bad taste, fuck it, that’s my own flavour"). Thats definitely a overharsh summary on my part - but in truth my expectations were off the scale for this release.

For a remix i'm not sure - perhaps some tweaking of the beat would've added some extra spice....without that its merely a solid tune which serves to illustrate how the orginal with Tommy Evans and Richochet hit the spot firsttime round. A good track but not as exceptional as the concept/lineup first indicated.
