Miniature Heroes Heroes For Hire (demo)

So what do we have here?

Well it’s a 23 minute freestyle demonstration from this three man Yorkshire unit, who are attempting to make some nation-wide links and start the treacherous climb up that industry ladder.

I’ve got to say I was impressed.

As the crew themselves admit the product is, ‘a little rough round the edges’ but they come with a nice original concept, making sure to keep your interest throughout the set. If promoters out there are looking for an opening act that can keep a crowd entertained and energy levels high, they need look no further than these chocolate boy-wonders.

The session begins in style with a sick beat-box medley consisting of the MIA beat and Superman theme, which will make you nod, chuckle, then head for the rewind button; in that order. We then get introduced to DJ Baboon who keeps it tight and smooth throughout the set, blending some familiar beats with a bunch of unknown bangers. In fact it’s the sort of understated performance that provides the perfect soundscape for the two emcees to really shine.

And so they do.

Arro and Lay Z Bone come off like a modern day Legion of Doom, with clear diction, swift tags and some killer moves. Both emcees have a distinct flow and an extensive vocab that places more emphasis on humour and clever wordplay than constant cussing or gimmicks. Every word is delivered with clarity too meaning you can catch their lyrics first time round and concentrate on the head nods on the repeat listen. Arro, as well as providing the nice beat-box moments, has a solid flow with a varied flex throughout. He’s complemented by LayZ, who comes at you with a jaw dropping multi-syllable style that balances the vocals up perfectly. This is highlighted on the grand finale. A brutal beat-box onslaught that LayZ destroys with a fully-automatic junglist flow that brings the piece to a satisfying conclusion.

I’d have liked to have heard a couple of tunes that stuck to the verse/chorus formula but as a platform for tempting promoters across the country to give them a chance to perform live, this freestyle session does the business.
