Pneumatic The Tall Stories EP (demo)

Coming straight outta Warrington, this 19 year old emcee brings the northern pain on this five track skill demonstration.

‘Somethin I Spat’ kicks things off and sets the vibe for the whole piece. Over a nice little slice of piano, this DJ Sloth produced bass driven intro provides the backdrop for some feisty battle talk. The half-sung hook is one of those you’ll either love or hate; most importantly though Pneumatic comes correct and delivers the goods with a style reminiscent of one of those sneaky Jehst flows that will have you checking for more.

‘Just Let Me Go’ switches the styles with a Noz produced up-tempo banger that keeps things sparse, highlighting the off the top sounding rhymes and rugged chorus. The third joint is a rowdy collabo with the ubiquitous Chronikill, extolling the virtues of the devil’s liquid over another slice of mid-tempo rawness. The final DJ Sloth production ‘Properly Done’ is on some spooky shit. Pneumatic and HennaCee combine to slay demons over a sick and haunting track that’s nicely complemented by a nutty two-note sample that reminds me of a track from the massively underrated Sadat X album from a few years back. The final, self-produced cut ‘Now A Thief’ has a sweetly sung hook courtesy of Aletha Berry that helps to make the lyrical content shine. The sound is a little more commercial but the lyrics have depth as Pneumatic weaves a story rhyme that works well in contrast with the more battle orientated themes found on the rest of the EP.

This is a promising and varied CD with a good overall standard of production. It’s been well thought out and constructed successfully to show that Pneumatic is no one trick pony. Listen and learn.
