Why S The Lone Keyboard Traveller EP (demo)
Something from the hiphop wilderness of Exeter in the shape of a three track CD from 20 year old producer and MC Why S?
'Post 90's Hate Victim' is the best track and kicks it off. Simple production but a nice deep electro vibe and a distinctly outside of London accent. Sounds something like a Somersetian Kid Acne actually, but the production is nothing like it. deep keyboard chords and that repetitive bass with computerised drum sounds. Nice.
'Die Stunde Null' (sorry I'm no good with German so don't know what that means) is my least favourite of the three. The drums running through sound a bit too artificial which makes it sound stuttery and cluttered. It gets more interesting in the bridge where there's a trumpet sample which feels both out of place and fits at the same time but overall It all kind of just washes over you with nothing really to reach and grab you, album filler style.
Final track 'The Ever Ever' shows his range of production styles a step more with some mellow jazz jungle thing. The production is top notch but it could probably stand on its own as an instrumental cut as the vocals don't really add anything. A more than competent piece of drum n bass production though.
Overall it definately shows promise, particularly in the willingness to try MCing over 'non-hiphop' production styles. Where the vocal style doesn't sound animated and has nothing that really grabs you the production is far more interesting than a lot of the commercial UK hiphop coming through at the moment. One to watch the future development of...
