Vortex Fables (demo)
Vortex is an emcee/producer hailing from Woking and 'Fables' is his first demo.
Vocally, Vortex needs to work on his flow which can be clunky and a touch clumsy in places and perhaps lay off the heavy handed double ups that do nothing to enhance his emceeing. Lyrically though, I really liked his writing, which includes some sharp political insights and interesting use of British mythology. My favourite cut of the four included here, the title track 'Fables', includes sharp lines like "new imperialism, 6 degrees, that's all we need before the sea rises, lethally", over a nice eastern hook.
Production-wise the beats are solid enough head-nodders and the tracks, although quite basic in structure, contain a nice line in epic, orchestral samples that work well with the mythical subject matter. One area to work on though is the mixing, which is a little too muddy in places, and the recorded quality of the vocals could be better, but these skills tend to improve with experience / equipment.
Overall, Fables is a promising first demo; a little rough around the edges but full of atmospheric ideas and imagery. Perhaps a change in style from the dark strings would make the tracks seem more varied but, all in all, a solid base to build on.
