Heavy Hitters Round One EP (demo)

The first release from the Heavy Hitters a.k.a. Uncle Heavy and DJ Criminal is an average CD. The beats from DJ Criminal show a lot of promise. However, the rhymes from Uncle Heavy suffer from a lack of tone and originality. DJ Criminal uses a nice array of drum pads and string/vocal samples to create a sombre and almost dark atmosphere. This release would have worked with the right rapper. There seems to be a lack of experience in Uncle Heavy’s voice. Staying pretty much in the same tone between verses and choruses in all songs and sticking to the same old lyrics about being better than you and how life is tough for him, there isn’t much to go on in terms of mic presence and personality. He doesn’t sound like he’s putting a lot of heart into his words, nor does he believe himself. When he raps “I’m rapping from the heart”, you don’t believe him. The first track “Heavy Hitters” is the best produced track on here and has a guest appearance by rapper, Emphasis whose high-pitched fast style works well over the beat. In all, the eight tracks here show a lot of potential in terms of production from DJ Criminal, who uses drums well and knows where to drop his samples in. However, the MC needs to do a bit more work and put more of himself into his rapping, carry the tunes more and tear them apart.
