Podgy Figures First You MC (Now You Rappin) (demo)
Some of you may have seen 23 year old West London rapper Podgy Figures on Channel U with the video for his self titled track. This demo is taken from his album ‘Hood Gazette’ and further demonstrates his confidence on the mic. The main track ‘First you MC Now You Rappin’ includes a sing-a-long chorus and a lazy flow in the vain of a certain Curtis Jackson.
Lyrics such as ‘Catch them in the market on Friday, they’re living the tramp way’ and ‘don’t be acting gangster around me, I’ll pull your skirt up and find a transsexual emcee’ do nothing to separate him from the many artists using egotistical playground cusses in their songs. The aforementioned track ‘Podgy Figures’ is included as one of the two bonus tracks and although offering little lyrically, the song does possess a catchy vibe that may have you sub-consciously humming along.
‘Rocked Up’ rounds up the short play listing with another hip- hop ode to the bling. While the beat has a raw edge that makes for pleasant listening, the depth of content in the spoken word again proves a detriment to the overall product. Podgy’s tracks have a more commercial appeal than many other UK offerings; however, he doesn’t possess the X-factor or the lyrical ammunition that has created such an underground buzz for the likes of Kano and Sway.
