Word Association The New Adventures Of…. EP

Another debut slab of the black stuff, and indeed another cracker. Word Association are a Cambridge-based crew consisting of emcees DC (who also provides the beats), Loki and 3 Degrees with Rawganics regular and co-promoter, Loftie Long behind the boards.

Slap it on the turntable and the cones begin to shake to the bass and harp stabs of the opener ‘Follow Me’. My favourite of the four tracks, all three emcees flow nicely over the scatter drums and stop-start groove, whilst the chorus takes in some nice vocal cuts. This track really had me moving – good stuff. The second track on this side, ‘Hod Nedding’ takes a darker turn with deep bass tones and classical string riffs. Once again the emcees spit impressively, letting loose a complex pattern of wordplay, each taking a verse at a time.

Opening the flip side is ‘Return To The Playground’, another spiky rhythm built around a frenetically cut up version of the old (showing my age again) Grange Hill theme tune, complete with that rasping guiro. A real bouncer this, that’s a couple of years old (Disorda has been known to drop it on occasion) but still sounding fresh. The EP is then brought to a close by ‘Dah Dah Dah Dah’, for which DC turns up the tempo and layers a rough beat over some quirky 70’s James Last-esque easy listening vocals. Definitely one of those tracks that brings a smile to your face and DC, Loki and 3 Degrees display their versatility by stepping up to the faster tempo with style.

Yet another fine debut from an emerging UK crew. Check it.
