Smokey Words From The Missing EP

I wasn’t really sure where to place this release, as it’s billed as a double EP, but is 10 tracks long. Whilst I’ve seen albums with less tracks, I guessed that if Smokey had wanted to call this an LP he would have called it one. Either way, Smokey has served up a dope little release, be it E to the P or L to the P or A to the motherfucking K.

The first point worthy of mention is the dark production by the duo of Bare Smoke, not a name you’re likely to be too familiar with, but they’re certainly nice with theirs. Lots of dark strings and moody bass make this in the most part, un-club friendly, but it’s definitely dope for what it is. The production suits Smokey’s style perfectly and he’s what could be described as a bit of an emcee’s emcee. That’s to say that it’s not the sort of thing your Mum’s going to trip upstairs to ask you what tune is this… you know like the first time you played “Ms Jackson”. But if you like your emcees with a bit of a ‘no bollocks’ approach then Smokey and his cronies are going to be right up your cal-de-sac. The whole EP reeks of competency and this culminates in the “Outro” which far from being the usual throw-away shit, is in fact a fully rounded track that makes other outros blush and cower.

With a Drum’n’Bass album set to drop next year, Smokey is clearly more adaptable than a chameleon, but make no mistake, this is a Hiphop EP with a standard much higher than the average. Inspect like Gadget.
