 Dirtburg The Eye, Stoke Newington

Two words. Fuck Me.

I’m still trying to recover from last night, both the effects of alcohol, and the ferocity of the music. I ache from too much dancing…..Dirtburg absolutely smashed it. It was that good. Nikesh and I went up to Stokie to interview these mo’ fo’s, and ended up dancing like drunken loons to the amazing live sound of the Dirtburg.

This is all the more impressive seeing as two weeks ago I had keyhole surgery on my knee, and really should not even be at work, let alone at this gig. But the urge to dance, pogo, or whatever you do was too great. If you need a band to rock a party, whether it be a wedding, funeral, bar mitzvah, or whatever, then look no further.

Dirtburg, in case you didn’t know, are a live Funked-up hip-hop band. The best live hip-hop band in the UK according to Cargo. The 6 members of Dirtburg are Jimmy 1, JD Sunset, Sanchez, Cha‘Riz’ma, ‘Johnny’ Boneca, and ND_066(SPR) the Sophisticated Party Robot, and fully justified their billing for the first gig of 2004, with top support from ‘Lazy Habits’, and the amazing Beat-boxing flutist………….

Yes, a beat-boxing flute player.

Put quite simply, YOU HAVE TO GO SEE DIRTBURG LIVE. They are the equivalent of a hot waitress with a nice arse. Banging. Riz and Bone lyrically are both tight in their delivery, and funny as fuck. Musically they sound a lot like Quantic, relying on quality live drumming, and live bass/guitar coupled with hip-hop necessities, the Turntables, and samples. Their music sounds so much better live, which is down to the energy and style of their performance as anyone who’s heard the Rare Japanese Bootleg Import E.P will testify. It really does have to be seen, to be believed. The set list (soon to be sold on e-bay) had everyone in the ‘i’ swinging their pants to ‘Monsoon’, tipping their Trilby’s to ‘Fine & Debonair’, dancing like crazy with a ‘Gypsy Jazz’ encore, and going mental, pogo-style to No One Can Defeat Me, where the ace nob, Boneca donned a hooded cape and sunglasses, super-hero stylee.

Check out their web-site. Find out where they’re playing next. Go. Take the next day off work or whatever, but go see them and be dirty. Then buy the one of the CD’s, Feeling Vanderbilt, or Rare Japanese Bootleg Import give it to someone you love.
