Choice FM Under 18's Junior Jam Hammersmith Palais

You have a room full of over 1,000 screaming, ecstatic young girls, and stick in a much-enticing known-‘balla’, who goes by the name of Chingy, as the headlining act, what more do you expect except absolute chaos, mad hype and a damn hot show?

Hammersmith Palais was the place to be if you were under-18, and preferably female, on Saturday, where a whole range of artists from both the UK and across the Atlantic took to the stage in front of an eager sold-out crowd.

Even though the show began at just after noon, and masses of sleep-deprived teenagers had been queuing as early as 8am, there was certainly no lack of atmosphere. Instead there was a lingering hyped-up feeling around. Throughout the day, a number of Choice DJ’s took to the decks and mic to present. The sensational duo of Masterstepz and Kat highlighted as they injected a little crude humour - Masterstepz commented on how one girl looked about 20, when Kat and his blunt humour butted in and asked if he meant a size 20, much to the amusement to the rest of the crowd.

The first act on stage was the impressive Shystie, performing her hit One Wish. Other performances came from So Solid crew member Swiss, the terrific unsigned act Lyracis, and Iceberg Slimm. Also live were the exhilarating Nexus Boys, a group of young, thriving dancers with a stunning routine, and the Choice FM dancers with a crisp, dynamic display. Smooth UK R&B breakthrough act Nathan, seductively performed a new tune and his reputable success Come Into My Room, juicing up the crowd just enough for the man who everybody had really come to see.

The exclusive, irresistible Chingy performance got the drooling and screaming audience’s temperatures rising to unbelievable levels as the St Louis rapper to the mic with his Git It Boyz entourage. Chingy, complete with glistening diamonds around his neck, played through his bass-heavy songlist with both released material including the rugged, wistful One Call Away, pimped-out second single Holidae Inn, sexy cut Chingy Jackpot, bling, cash money and sex-driven new single Balla Baby and not one, but two, versions of the original hit Right Thurr. He also performed new tracks from his upcoming album Powerballin’, out in November, remixes to the Young Gunz’ Can’t Stop Won’t Stop and J-Kwon’s Tipsy, and a new tune from the Git It Boyz record coming out next year.

Judging from his sex-influenced videos, and the fact he must spend a lot of his time with known-player Ludacris, you would expect him to be quite full-of-himself, however he seemed more like a little kid on stage, occasionally laughing nervously and seemingly quite flattered by the amount of attention he was getting. His set was definitely well-prepared though, but obviously too overwhelming for a number of fans who had to be pulled out of the crowd due to fainting, collapsing, or simply being unable to handle the fact that they want to sex with Chingy so bad, and, unfortunately, can’t.

Overall the show was definitely live, however the number of over-excited groupie-types did have a negative factor, although that’s expected from this type of show. The DJ’s made the long gaps between PA’s not quite so tedious, playing the latest tunes and old classics, as well as some great commentary in between. There probably won’t be another Choice Junior Jam for a while, as they are moving their studios, but I’d recommend the next one to anyone who wants a cheap, great day out, but be warned of the excessive squashing, pushing, bitching and mad hype!
