Mr Lingo presents... 36 Hours in Brighton
That’s right. You can believe your eyes…… I spent 36 Hours in Brighton, ably assisted by my loyal Yam, as ukhh.com’s first in a series(?) of insights into the ukhh scene outside of the Republic of Greater London.
After purchasing our ‘luxury’ tickets to Brighton using the ukhh.com off-shore account, my Intrepid traveller and myself cracked open the first of our Travel Stella’s and discussed the plan for the next 36 hours. Using our in-depth knowledge of the Brighton scene, (no, not THAT one) and using various contacts we had, an interview with Foreign Beggars was arranged to co-incide with their show later that night at ‘The Beach’ supporting Blak Twang, and a number of record digging hot-spots were also highlighted.
The two Stella-fuelled hours on the Megabus flew by, and we soon found ourselves in the middle of Brighton. After watching a fellow Megabuser ‘relieve’ himself against a church, we took the long way to our hostel. A 30 second walk was negotiated unsuccessfully in almost 5 minutes, and with two sets of directions. After sorting the room, and finding out the bar stayed open till 4am we headed for the Charity shops. Those of you familiar with the scene in Brighton will understand how much of the music from Brighton has its roots, albeit slightly, planted in Charity shops. “Charity shop Soundclash” by DJ Format, for instance.
We headed for James St, and paradise amongst the grannies, and volunteer workers on a Friday afternoon. The 1st one gave way to the only real jewel. A copy of “say No Go” (Dope remix) by De La Soul was acquired (along with a lot of shit) for 25 new English pence. The other shops heralded a few other rarities, including Marky Mark & the Funky Bunch on 7”, and a few that took the Yam Boy’s fancy. Next stop was the Cash Converter, which proved rich pickings, with a Korg Drum Machine picked up for £60.
After valiantly scouring some of the other Record stores across Brighton, and flouting the drinking laws of Brighton, we headed for the Mash Tun. The ‘Mash’ is a bar with a G-O-R-G-E-O-U-S barmaid, and a nice upstairs seating area, which was to become home while we waited for the arrival of Boneccatron…or not. After far too much Guinness we decided to go to do our interview with FB, and then head to the show.
See Live Review & Interview for Further details.
4am, Sat. Still at the bar…..time for bed.
10.30am, Sat. Cleaner bursts in…(by Oden’s Raven!) waking me from my comatose state in a world of pain. Shower, change, out to brave the world, and meet a couple of mates for a lunchtime drink. Head out to a few more record stores, clothes shopping at H& M where I throw a few toys out of the pram. Go to buy £50 worth of records, have both cards declined, then Switch card eaten by cash point…….time to head home methinks. Brighton is now experiencing a full-on monsoon, and the 5min walk sees us absolutely soaked through.
3.00pm. Wet, tired and hungover, we retreat to the Megabus, and London.
*Brighton is well worth a visit, lots of hotties, cheap records, and quality nightlife. Megabus is £1 each way, and one-night @ St Christopher’s Inn was £21.50.
