This is a good solid second release from Blood and Jonez’ Deprogrammed crew. It features original produced beats from Alex Blood and collaborative efforts from some of the UK’s best up-and-comers and potential next-big-things. Contributors such as Stylah, aMMo and Doyen D pop up as well as Deprogrammed regulars Jonezy, Jalporte, Perry Jigga (on a hilarious Tim Westwood pastiche) and Fierce Freas. After a lacklustre first track with vocals by Alex Blood and Nick Bell, the CD picks up with the excellent “Politrix” by aMMo. Cariz and Keelo do a good job over a great beat and though the vocals are mixed too low, the polemic shines through and they deliver a good conscious song. Next up is the banger “All Roads Lead North” with Doyen D on the mic. This has a absolutely fantastic guitar line and great drums on it, and production-wise it is one of the best tracks on the compilation. The problem with it though is Doyen D’s voice. He has a very distinctive voice and so could do with a good sound engineer being able to mix his voice. It comes over as too muddy and there is no definition or clarity in the mixing of his delivery. This is a shame, because it is a great track. Special mentions go to the track by Skeptic, “Veils”, showing a strong up-and-comer and Madrox’s solid “End this Way.” Grand Iris’ track “Shades of Grey,” falls down because of a good but unmoving female vocal that sits uncomfortably in the mix and “Big Money Dreams” serves up a lot of
clichés over a so-so beat. The final track “Children of the Water,” is a great working example of the Deprogrammed sound and paves the way of a hopeful. This is a good, solid release and a great showcase of a project taking the focus off Deprogrammed and on to the potentials all lining up to make dents in the scene. Strong beats, and some good lyrics and voices, this is worth picking up. © ukhh.com 1999 - 2004 |
