 Dap-C Character Building LP

Dap-C’s first release on Sin Nombre records shows some potential for the future. Built around groove-some synth-beats and featuring a host of Northern talent, including the incorrigible Pedigree Chumps, this has some strong moments on it. There are moments, though, where it feels like two albums put together. Dap-C’s voice is a whisper in places and almost too soft and tender for the hard living lyrics he spits. On the crew tracks, with other MCs to raise the bar for him, he sounds more alive and more hardcore, attacking the mic harder and sounding more hyped. These two different styles work but there are occasions where you think that Dap-C’s battle voice and more aggressive approach works better than the whisper. There are also too many lyrics on here about cocaine, but played with a completely ambiguous tone, meaning you’re never quite sure if he’s condemning from experience, or advocating. Not to appear a prude or anything but some of the references do border on irresponsible, but are every now and then countered with something a bit more conscious. Apart from that, there are some good lyrics about growing up in tough times and kicking against the grain. It would have been better to have different themes on the album as the amount of these kinds of lyrics over-egg it after a while but they work well to introduce Dap-C to the UK. His rhythms could be a little more complex, but I’m sure that will come with time. He also needs to attack the mic harder. Stand out tracks are the crew cuts, “ Set It Off Straight” and the funny “Manchester Girls”, featuring the Pedigree Chumps.

This is an album worth checking out. There are some good crew tracks on it, Universon has some nice moments and the Pedigree Chumps do their beat justice. Worth a listen.
