 Doc Brown The Document LP

The Doc finally comes forth with an album, and what an album it is too. It’s been a along time coming and not even the excellent mixtape “Citizen Smith”, released last year, could whet our appetites enough.

Finally in early 2005, he drops “The Document.”Ranging from sombre and heartfelt in “Alone,” featuring an excellent cameo from Reveal as Doc’s mirror image, telling him everything he doesn’t want to hear to uptempo and raucous like “What We Come For” featuring all the Poisonous Poets. The album lurches between melancholy stories of street life and love lost to uplifting stories of family ties and survival in the music game. The mood chops and changes, starting off uptempo, before getting down to some moods before lifting up again for the end. It’s a refreshing listen too. Some of the tracks are earmarked for chart potential and cross-over success, like “Do It” and “Family Ties”, whilst others, like the uplifting and incredible “Characters”, featuring some amazing lyrics and the string-led “Survival” are for the hip-hop heads. There is something for everyone on here. With productions from Nutty P, Makani, C-Swing and soulful moments from DJ Snips, as well as appearances by Doc’s brother, Luc Skyz, Yungun and the ridiculously talented Poisonous Poets, there is enough here to sustain the album for 14 tracks. No skits, no messing about, just tune after tune. Doc’s integrity, passion and intricate rhyming work well on all the tracks and shows off the immense talent he has been honing for years. Listening to the album though, makes me hungry for more Reveal and Poisonous Poets. “The Document” will be keeping me company for the meantime.
