 Desperate Measures Volume 1 LP

Desperate Measures are a name that doesn’t ring any bells, but I’m sure soon they might just be on a few people lips. A rather confident move on their part in that they plan to drop this LP before wetting appetites with any singles, but maybe this is a more effective way of getting material out there nowdays.

‘Volume 1’ is 16 tracks deep, with more different flavours than a Walkers variety Pack. This is due in part to the large collective of emcees who make up Desperate Measures, which seems to be close to 10, along with a fair rack of producers. From the beautiful production and sing along hook on ‘Changes’, to the rugged vibes of ‘2 Minutes’, you certainly won’t find yourself getting bored. Sadly this also means the listener can get somewhat overawed with all the different styles on offer, whilst never quite getting a feel for the character of any featured emcee. That said, so many tracks jump out at me from this LP, some of which sound like real club hits. ‘You Don’t Even Know’ for example has fun, playful lyrics, bouncing over equally cheery xylophone tones… just what doctor ordered for a night out! There are many more tracks that had me reaching for the repeat button more than once and some of these tracks get a real regular play-out.

Despite at times feeling like a compilation of un-related artists, credit must be given to the fact that out of 16 tracks, not many, if any, are skippable. Incredibly well mastered, this really does feel like an LP that could have dropped on an established label. Not sure on how well this will be distributed when it drops, but hopefully they’ll make an effort as this could be a bit of a hit me thinks!
