The Anomalies Sticks To The Bricks LP
The Anamolies are a four piece group from Hereford who have been around for a couple of years now. This, their first release, is 13 tracks of mostly straight up party hip hop, which is good for them considering their aim is to “bring danceable hip hop to the UK urban scene.”
The beats, produced by Dodge, are generally upbeat and high tempo with a lot of horns throughout the set. They certainly hit the right buttons, and I imagine in a live setting, they would really get the place bouncing. And he does get to show off his versatility a little bit with a few tracks, namely “Gimme That Mic” which is a mid-tempo tune that provides an excellent backing for the battle rhymes on this particular song, “Word Association” which has a much more breakbeat/garage feel to it, “Urban Myth” which has the slowest tempo and horns that sound like screams, which really add to the horror film feel of the song, and the outro which features a ‘secret’ track on a drum n bass tip.
The rhymes, provided by MC Goldseal and Mouth Master Murf, are certainly not mind blowing, in fact, they’re mostly pretty basic. And the double time spitting on “Spit-Roast” are pretty poor in my view, as you cannot make out any of the lyrics. Also, most of the songs do have a concept, but it is stuff that has been covered numerous times and to better effect in the past. Admittedly, considering their above aim, this is none too surprising, and once again, you can definitely see this going over much better live. This is especially true of “Robohop” where Mouth Master Murf performs an extremely impressive vocal scratch, as it goes without saying that any form of beatboxing is never going to be as exciting in a recorded version.
So, all in all, not bad, yet not something that is going to really draw in the hip hop connoisseurs.
