Various Character Assassins Volume 1 LP
“Character Assassins” is a mixtape conceived by Chemo and Conflix, which explains the vast number of tunes on here that are produced by the former and have the latter rapping on them. However, this is not a “50 Cent Is The Future” style mixtape with an aim of providing exposure for Conflix, but is rather a more noble effort that brings together the more underground UK acts such as Doc Brown, Lowkey and Wordsmith with such up-and-coming acts as Antiheroes, Possessed and Mossman Skank in an effort to show the world what our battlers are made of. And they’re made of stern stuff, if this set is anything to go by.
Technically, the mix itself is competent, although it is nothing special. But that’s because the only thing that matters here are the actual tunes, of which there are many. With the majority of the tracks produced by Chemo there is a definite coherence to the whole thing, which means that listening to it the whole way through is not a chore at all. But what will be of interest to most people here are the rhymes. As this is a showcase of certain talents from the UK, you can be confident that the skills are top notch, with vicious spitting, punchlines and sick flows coming from all present. These skills also culminate especially well in 5 of the songs, those that make up the “Assassin Session Pt …” These are live ciphers over some recent bangers that were recorded in one take, which makes them all the more impressive. On top of this, you also get cuts of 12”s you might recognise such as Manage’s “Rise Up”.
Overall, this is a quality product that features some top notch, raw and rugged battle raps from “verbal assailants who exist to ruin their opponent’s reputation” and some really nice, complementary beats. Be sure to pick it up.
