Damaged Goodz Audiobiography LP
This LP is said to be inspired by the autobiography of Sir Alex Ferguson and like the red faced blow dryer, these boys are unashamedly Scottish. The reason I felt the need to mention this from the outset, is that it’s the first thing that really impacts on this release. For those unfamiliar with our Celtic brethrens north of the border brand of hiphop, it may take a wee bit of adjusting too. Much like the first time I heard a Notts accent on a cut, this release may require you to ‘get in character’ a little bit before you can look past the accent and enjoy the music.
That said, the music doesn’t always deliver the goods. Regularly sounding overly-polished, this album has more than a hint of 80’s snyth lingering around it. I’m not a diehard, “thou shalt use an mpc and obscure records” kind of a hiphop kiddie, however, I do feel that this LP could have done with having a few more jagged edges adding in the mix down. For example ‘Life & Soul Of The Party’ sounds like it was spat out of ejay. Sometimes, the producer Steg – G gets it spot on though. ‘U Complete Me’ shows just how cheesy snyths can work, as long as it’s constructed with the right vibe in mind. Another heavy track, ‘Brainwavez’ uses a vocal sample superbly and the resulting track is a distinctly Scottish sounding banger! Likewise ‘Higher Power’ is a really vivid track, with production that almost takes you up to the highlands! The emcee, Beejay, does a solid job throughout the LP and whilst never quite wowing with lyrical flowetry, his ability to theme tracks and indeed the entire album is quite impressive.
Between them Beejay and Steg-G manage to squeeze some real Scottishness in this LP, sadly it’s on other fronts this LP falls down. Often sounding basic from both the production and emceeing fronts, ‘Audiobiography’ struggles to leave any great impact.
