Da Govnors Compilation LP
Da Govnors is as rather hefty double CD compilation of UK artists, some of which you’ll have heard of, like Fallacy, Skeme & MD7, and then others you most likely won’t know from Adam. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a non-mixtape have a larger range of artists than this, we are talking over 40 different emcees… shit is ridiculous! In fact, the actual method statement of this CD is slightly unclear, I’m guessing it’s to showcase some (read loads) emcees whilst putting out beats by Jay’O. For the only common theme here is that Jay’O produces all the original beats used. That causes problems for me as I’m not always 100% sure which ones are Jay’O’s own productions and which ones are jacked from elsewhere. Still, out of 48 tracks, there are some heavy beats, some of which inevitably produced by the big man.
‘Live Your Life’ ft. J-Biggs has got a monster trumpet sample for the hook, which then turns metallic for the verses, dopeness; or the grime version of ‘Say A Little Prayer’ ft. Triggs Vega works surprisingly well, with the emcee bouncing along with snippets of the classic Aretha Franklin version jumping in and out; just some of the treats on offer. The production highlight has to come from Jay’O’s take on the Charmells ‘I’ll Never Grow Old’ used by the Wu for ‘C.R.E.A.M.’. This break has always been one of my favourites and with MD7 & Blind Alphabetz showing it the lyrical respect it deserves, it adds a new dimension to this classic.
The bare variety of emcees on offer means that this project is always going to sound a bit of a mess in terms of continuity, but the UK grime feel throughout ensures you generally know what you’re getting from one track to the next. Whilst it’s the more established artists that generally stand out (Skeme kills it!), there’s no doubt we’ll be hearing plenty more from the emcees on show. In and around nearly 160 minutes of music, there is going to be highlights and lowlights, but overall those feeling the grimey ish are going to be feeling this.
