Wordsmith Road Man Showcase LP
A tad late on the uptake with this one, but better late than never as a Viagra user would say. ‘The Roadman Showcase’ is one of, if not the most grimy, hardcore sounding hiphop to be released on Son Records to date. 17 tracks of no nonsense, intense rhyming over some harsh head-nodders… this is not hiphop for the fainthearted.
With 4 tracks featuring the talents of one of the highlights of 2005, Genesis Elijah whose minimal bollocks style fits in great with the main man and with all the tracks produced by Tom Caruana, this LP definitely keeps a similar vibe throughout, making for pain free transfers from track to track. ‘Lost In A Mock’ and ‘My Manor’ are among the strongest tracks on offer, but ‘Another Day’ with its cooled out jazz piano sample is on some next sh*t, which calls for bare replays.
This is not an album proper allegedly, more an aperitif for the real meal soon come. If Wordsmith manages to cut out one or two of the blander tracks and fill it up with anything close to ‘Another Day’ then it will be something to cherish indeed. In the mean time, familiarise yourself with the Smith of Words with this ample little offering.
