Baron Samedi Ripping Yarns LP
Casting my mind back a fair few years back, I remember being passed a demo by Baron Samedi and was suitably impressed by the mans lyricism & production credentials. After not really hearing anything from him in the interim period other than an EP back in 2001, ‘Ripping Yarns’ comes as a very pleasant surprise to me and undoubtedly others.
At 17 tracks, the album has as many different concepts and themes as you’d be able to cram onto the space of a little shiny disk. From ‘Arachnophobia’ to ‘Snuff’, lyrically Samedi shows his competitors what a gifted emcee he is. A clear, concise delivery allows you to soak up every spoken word and it’s well worth paying attention, because he chats about all sorts of interesting stuff. His production is impressive too, like the jazzy beat for ‘X’ or the headnod inducing b-line of ‘French Letters’. The production has plenty of clarity, sounding clean without it coming across as over-produced. The highlight of the album comes on ‘Back To Nature’ where Samedi spits inspiring lyrics about, well nature of course, over a beautiful beat that has the most amazing looped sweet vocals you’ll have heard in ages.
‘Ripping Yarns’ has so many levels lyrically, that you will find yourself constantly coming back to it, whether it’s just to play one or two of your favourites, or to play in its entirety, allowing yourself to be taken on the full journey.
