Illa Man The Holy Moley LP
Illa Man, the former front man of Hip Hop/Metal/D’n’B act Flict, touches down for his debut LP “The Holy Moley”, 14 dark and sombre tracks courtesy of Buttercuts Records. An album heavily influenced by Illa Man’s eclectic tastes, there’s no doubt this is a Hip Hop album, but the lazy and at times spoken word flow has roots in Grime, D’n’B and Dancehall.
This lazy flow fits the sombre vibe of the album perfectly and you’re soon caught up in the charm of Illa Man. The press release reports that this depressing vibe is a result of the tragic death of Illa Man’s best mate, yet I can’t imagine his style any other way as he sounds so comfortable with this persona. Alongside the two Willy’s (that’s his two producers yo!) they serve up gem after gem, such as the enigmatic “Hungry” or the dancehall riddim of “Sunshine (Let It In)”. Each beat, Ill Man comes correct and show’s himself to be a thoughtful emcee who is a master at riding the beat. It is an incredibly consistent album, with only the occasional blip on an otherwise impervious surface.
“The Holy Moley” is likely to be something of a rude awakening to those (like me!) who were oblivious to Illa Man’s talents. To come with a debut LP this hard is something which, if he builds from, could see him being a real shining star in the somewhat hazy skies of UK music right now.
