Black Grass A Hundred Days in One LP
Black Grass heads up the current Brighton regiment with an excellent second album on the Catskills label. The album showcases his deft production, weaving together styles and genres in a way that is hard to resist.
Latin rhythms and funk on ‘Lucha Contra La Injusticia’ contrast with the reggae bounce of ‘Oh Jah’ while Jehst, Blu Rum 13, Malay Sparks and Micall Parknsun all drop in to add varied lyrical touches to the contrasting hip hop productions of Black Grass. Elsewhere you’ll also find the hypnotic, downtempo stylings of ‘Don’t Leave Me This Way’ with Dominique Noiret, one of the album’s highlights and instrumental stylings with hints of jazz and soul on ‘The Floating Wizard’ and ‘Nemesis’.
Black Grass manages to deliver an album that rarely leaves you wanting to skip ahead even if its strength lies in a few outstanding offerings. As a whole it’s a pleasing musical escapade that grows on you with each listen and packs enough crowd pleasers to be a nice addition to your record box. If variety is the spice of life, than Black Grass seasoned his album like a Michelin starred chef.
