Dr. Syntax Self Taught LP
Since bursting into the scene with guest appearances on the Foreign Beggars’ Asylum Speakers in 2001, Dr. Syntax has slowly but surely grafted his way to becoming one of the UK’s premier wordsmiths. These days his social commentary and creative style stand alone amongst the monotonous beats and raps that is all too easily accessible in today’s hip hop world.
Self Taught is the first full length album from the myopic visionary and showcases his tight rhyming skills over a range of beats from the likes of Dag Nabbit and Brighton crate diggers Ido and Evil Sun.
The album beings aptly with Arrival featuring fellow Imagineer Koaste, Wordsmith and Manipulate over a low slung epic beat, the type which seem to dominate the first half of the album with tunes like the smooth Max Miller and She’s Quite Some Picture in which Syntax waxes lyrical about females who aren’t always quite what they seem.
Highlights of the album are the tongue –in-cheek rhymes about the amateur promoters he encounters on My Night and the relaxed strings of Slow Down where Synners urges us all to take a step back from the hectic stresses of life and relax for a minute.
Also included are the tunes which have recently made taken his live shows up a notch including Pack Mentality featuring Orifice Vulgatron and the now legendary collaboration with big Stig, Fatty and Speccy. If you haven’t seen their live Beer and Rap Roadshow with DJ Newborn yet, you definitely need to!
Due out on 28th May, this is only the fourth record on Beer and Rap, but with more releases in the pipeline, this could definitely be their year.
