DEMON BOYZ RECOGNITION LP
For any Hip Hop album to get a re-release 10 years after its birth is a commendable achievement, and an even more unique one when it is a British rap group who are concerned.
Demon Boyz, consisting of Mike J \{aka Million Dollar Dan\} Demon D and DJ Devastate were instrumental in the geneaology of British rap. But to any fresh ear, like mine, I am immediately struck by Demon Ds pseudo-American accent, working in tandem with the familiar and welcome Ragga-lean of Mike J. A rap style that went on to influence The London Pose, including Rodney P and Seanie T era of UK Hip Hop. The scratch heavy, boom bap melancholy of DJ Devastates production harks back to a more innocent time for English Hip Hop where music was made for fun rather than any commercial gain.
'Vibes' still stands up despite being indicative of the time. Other highlights include 'Northside', which may well be one of the first UK rap songs to focus on territorial dwellings and 'Don't Touch It' with it's anti \{hard\} drugs sentiment is soaked in Reggae goodness. Four extra tracks are also included, 'This Is A Jam' which is the very first Demon Boyz single, the unheard 1990 remix of 'Vibes', 'Grand Finale' a song recorded live from Cafe De Paris, featuring Daddy Freddy and an anonymous Asher D which brings through the essence of Demon Boyz live, as well as a hidden track, 'Recognition'.
The first in the Suspect Packages re-issue series, 'Recognition' is an album for the purist, so if that's you brush off the Air Jordan jacket, treat yourself to a Nourishment, sit back and enjoy
