 Metabeats Metaphysical LP

If you’ve not heard of this producer, you can probably be forgiven. However, if you decide to overlook him after he’s craft this slice of Hiphop genius, then you need to get bitch slapped! For “Metaphysical” is a lesson to the overwhelming majority of UK producers who try to wing an album.

Metabeats is a rare breed of producer, who arguably doesn’t have a ‘sound’. This doesn’t mean he doesn’t have an identity, but it means that on an album of only 13 tracks, there’s an astonishing variety with an incredible consistency. The album is crisp and sharp when and where it needs to be, but it remains dirty any funky too. A great example is the track “Metacypher”, which sounds like it could have been something killarmy or the Gravediggaz would have used back in the day. Yet this isn’t some attempt at a throwback to the mid-90s, because there’s plenty of progressive thought in this album, like the electronic tinged “Know Now”.

The host of emcees may again be a new one on most not familiar with the South Wales circuit, but it demonstrates an unbelievable depth to a scene that barely gets a ray of light shone on it from those across the Severn. So not only is this album a productional masterclass, but hopefully it will also serve as an educational aid to the unfortunately all to often ignorant Hiphop fan.

Metabeats has created an album that is sure to stand the test of time and become a regular in any collection. The only question that now remains is how far can Metabeats not only take his own skills, but how far can he take the Welsh scene?
